Japanese Sunday School is a non-profit organisation which was established in September, 1992 by nine Japanese mothers who had a passion for their children to learn the Japanese language. It started off with 17 students in three classes. Today, the school has grown to accommodate almost 80 students studying enthusiastically every Sunday. The school was recognised as a Community Language School in 2004 by the State Government, and recognised as a NPO by ATO in 2012

10:00AM – 12:45PM on every Sunday during school terms. 3 periods (45 minutes/period)

School Facilities
Our library has Japanese books suitable for various age groups and offers this as a free service.
School Operation
This school is operated by numerous volunteers including committee members and assistant teachers. The School Committee, consists of 7 volunteers selected every year, is in charge of managing the school. All parents co-operate to the committee to operate the school by participating in events and undertaking school duties throughout the year.The school’s income is generated from the school admission fee, annual fee, tuition fees, government subsidies as well as through fund raising activities. These incomes are critical to cover operating expenses such as teacher’s fees, teaching materials and maintenance fees.
School Roster (Approximately three times per year)
Each week, a school committee member is in charge and three parents are rostered on to work as a group. The group will check the safety of classrooms, open and close blinds, install rubbish bags, take photocopies and drive teachers as required to the station. If you are unable to be a part of this roster system for a reason, there will be a charge of $70 per term.
Classes
Preschool class, Class K, Class 1 to 6 – Direct Method
Class P is to encourage students to get familiar with Japanese language and it focused on learning Japanese through songs, games and craft activities. Class K will learn to read and write words in the Hiragana character script. Class 1 to 6 students study Japanese by using the Japanese textbooks (authorised by the Japanese Department Of Education) suitable to their levels utilising a balanced development of listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is our aim to complete Year 6 textbook used in Japan at the final level.
International Class (BOX Class) – Indirect Method
For the international class, we have a special class called BOX Class. This class is designed to provide each student an environment where they are able to learn at their own pace, including preparation for HSC. Our qualified and experienced Japanese teacher explains grammar and vocabulary and culture, using both English and Japanese. Lessons cover all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Activities include games, cultures, quiz and cooking in Japanese. Students’ learning path is custom-made to all individual needs. It is currently a mixed-class from Year 6 to 12.
Events and Activities
Main School Events
Bean Throwing Festival, Doll Festival, Children’s Day, Star Festival, Sports Carnival, The End of The Year Presentation and Christmas party.
Parent observation days are scheduled twice a year.

Prerequisite
In general, a student has to be school age in the NSW school education. Preschoolers must be at least 3 years and 6 months old in February when school commences and are scheduled to start Kindergarten the following year. Besides, the following three conditions must be met:

Must be able to understand instructions in Japanese and participate in class activities.

Must have acquired basic daily life skills and be fully toilet trained at the time of enrollment. This includes being able to manage age‑appropriate self‑care tasks such as dressing, handwashing, and tidying up.

A parent must be able to participate in volunteer activities for school management/operations through roles such as a committee member and school roaster.
Trial System

School Fees
The amounts of fees stated below are subject to change.
Entrance Fee
$70 per child.
Term Fee
$140 per child per term ($170 for preschool, $220 for the international class). You will be required to pay by the last day of each term for the next term’s tuition.
Annual Fee
$70 per family
CLS Grant make up
Additional fee is required for non-schoolers and the students who do not satisfy minimum of 70% attendance during Term1.
Absence
Long Term Absence
If you wish your child to be absent from school for a term or more, there will be a charge of $35 per term to hold their place in the school.
Withdrawal from school
Please contact us if you wish to withdraw your child from school for any reason. No enrolment fee will be charged if the student returns to school.

Hannans Road, Riverwood NSW 2210 10 minutes walk from Riverwood Station (East Hills/Airport Line).
Parking
Vehicles are generally prohibited from entering the school grounds. For drop‑off and pick‑up, please park on the streets surrounding the school. For safety reasons, picking up or dropping off students directly in front of the main school gate is also not permitted.
